Bonsai Growing as a Form of Serious Leisure and a Source of Wellbeing

Researcher: Yazdan Mansourian

The project showed bonsai art allows the participants to practice creativity and autonomy in their daily lives. The participants frequently refer to their bonsai hobby as one of the reasons they wake up in the morning and engage in their everyday life activities. Also, bonsai growing is an excellent example of the persistent pursuit of perfection through deep attention to the details which brings many personal benefits, such as serenity and mindfulness. The result, supported by the current literature, shows serious leisure is a rich source of empowerment and self-actualisation. Moreover, most participants believed bonsai growing is an open window for them toward the horizon of Japanese culture and traditions. Therefore, it is an invaluable opportunity to foster intercultural ties between Japan and Australia.
